Advanced Animal Diagnostics, Zoetis Partner in Europe

Partnership will bring rapid test for precise antibiotic use to vets and dairies in Europe

MORRISVILLE, NC — August 24, 2016 —Advanced Animal Diagnostics (AAD) announced today it will partner with Zoetis, the leading animal health company, to bring AAD’s innovative mastitis detection technology to the top dairy producing countries in Europe. AAD’s QScout® MLD (milk leukocyte differential) test will enable more precise use of antibiotics in a European dairy industry that is intent on reducing their use. The test runs on AAD’s portable lab-in-a-box diagnostic platform, the QScout® Farm Lab, to detect infection before visual symptoms appear and allow vets and dairies to make earlier, more effective treatment decisions to prevent losses.

“AAD is excited to partner with Zoetis to bring our new technology to Europe at a time when pressures on antibiotic use are increasing and milk prices are struggling. We believe we can save dairies and the veterinarians who serve them money by improving milk production and quality while using antibiotics only on cows that truly need them.” said Joy Parr Drach, AAD president and CEO.

Mastitis infections cost the dairy industry an estimated $2 billion annually in the U.S and over €1 billion in Europe through reduced milk production, decreased milk quality, and suppressed reproductive performance. Traditional mastitis diagnostic tests, which look for the presence of live pathogens, pose significant challenges for veterinarians and dairy producers due to milk sampling and handling requirements. The QScout MLD test provides a more precise diagnosis by decoding the immune system’s response to infection, identifying and differentiating white blood cells in milk. The QScout Farm Lab reads the test, looking for elevated cell type ratios that indicate infection to calculate an accurate, quarter-level diagnosis.

AAD’s QScout MLD test can be used in Europe to guide selective dry cow therapy, which has become more prevalent due to antibiotic regulations. In U.S. trials, QScout MLD guided selective dry cow therapy led to a 47% reduction in antibiotic use at the cow level and a 59% reduction at the quarter level. In addition to improving profits and fostering judicious use of antibiotics, early detection of mastitis with QScout MLD promotes animal welfare and ensures cow comfort.
